Amidst all the challenges of reopening schools, the shooting of Jacob Blake is devastating. The continued violence and racial injustice are unacceptable – and alongside a pandemic, virtual teaching, extreme weather, and fires that are crushing communities, it’s hard for many of us to be fully present at school.

We’re focusing this week’s email on how to build a safe, culturally responsive classroom environment. You can find tips on discussing racial equity with your students, join a NAF Next speaker for a cultural competency training in September, or find tips on how to care for yourself and your colleagues so you can be ready to support your students.

One of our favorite NAF Next speakers, Sharmayne Jenkins, is back to help you examine implicit biases, build a culturally competent classroom, and support social belonging and identity. This is a three-part series on Sep 15, 17, and 22 – register for all three or just pick a single one. 
Hospitality & Tourism Curriculum
September is just around the corner! This week, we’re featuring our favorite ideas for the start of the school year – ones that can easily flex to a virtual or in-person classroom.

Hospitality: Great customer service is an essential skill in the hospitality industry, so have your students complete this engaging module from CTE Online on email, phone, and video interviewing skills.

Tourism: While many tourist destinations are closed, try using Google Maps to plan an exciting trip. This step-by-step guide can easily be converted into a project-based lesson.

Culinary Arts: Have your students ever dined at a food truck? Now they can design their own. Try this project from CTE Online to design the inside of a food truck.

Marketing: Teach students how to create a commercial to draw in new members to their favorite student organization, using this engaging project from CTE Online.
HOW WE'RE TEACHING ONLINE
Zoom is free for educators again, and our educators love its simple ways to split people into breakout rooms or put everyone on mute. Then once all your students arrive online, get them energized for the day with these nine openers that will build community and creativity. 

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING - RACIAL EQUITY IN CTE
